At Heart Land Prairie Cemetery we are planting the burial meadow in prairie species native to the Great Plains. Prairie restoration is a multi-year process involving periodic mowing and burning. Burning the prairie is an effective way to keep the prairie healthy and is essential in ensuring that the perennial native species that we have planted here thrive in the long term. Burning restores nutrients to the soil, prevents invasive species from outcompeting native prairie plants, and maintains a grassy environment where woody trees might otherwise take over.
In 2016, we completed the first seeding of the burial meadow in a prairie seed mix that includes grasses and many flowers. The first burn of the burial meadow took place on February 5th, 2023.
